Sapphire Core Institute
About Us
We're a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working on AI safety and ethics. Most of our work so far is in schools.
Our mission
Most of the work is training
Our mission is enabling the safe, effective, and ethical use of modern technology and securing the future of education in a digital-leaning environment. Day to day, that mostly means training: helping teachers, students, and the schools and organizations around them use AI carefully and without producing slop.
The premise
What kind of AI ends up in schools, and who decides
Whether AI would show up in classrooms was settled a while ago. What's still open is which tools get used and who gets a say. We don't argue for taking AI out, and we don't pretend every use is a good one.
The thing we're working against is slop, meaning material generated in bulk with nobody's judgment behind it. It pushes out better work because it's cheaper. We think the answer is authorship: a teacher decides what goes in front of students and stays responsible for it.
How the work is organized
Three pillars, in priority order
1. Training
Teaching people to use AI well, including safety, ethics, and how to spot slop. It's for teachers and students first, then schools, districts, and organizations outside education.
Where the training stands2. Anti-slop
A standard for what AI-assisted material, especially classroom material, has to meet. It shapes the training and everything we publish.
Why schools need it3. Democratic AI
Teachers build and choose their own tools instead of a company choosing for them. Any tool built this way should work as well in an underrepresented school as anywhere else.
Read the principleWe want teachers deciding what goes into each of these, and we'd love you to be one of them. Get involved
What we're not
Two things people assume about us
Not an ed-tech vendor
We are a nonprofit. We don't sell AI tools, detection software, or subscriptions, and this site carries no advertising or affiliate links.
Not an anti-AI campaign
We don't think bans work. Mostly they teach students to hide what they're doing. We'd rather help teachers and students tell when AI is helping with the work and when it's replacing it.
